Women Support and Empowerment Group
Domestic violence commonly known as intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pattern of abusive behavior that keeps one partner in a position of power over the other through the use of fear, intimidation, and control. In this case, the latter one is women and girls while the first one refers to males. It can be in the form of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional spiritual and financial abuse. Gender violence, emotional abuse, interpersonal violence, child abuse, teen relationship violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse and elder abuse are all examples of domestic violence.
Regardless of race/ethnicity, income, age, education or sexual orientation, domestic violence is all pervasive! It is deeply rooted in sexism, racism and a culture of permissive violence.
Rising Cases of Domestic Violence
In the United States, domestic violence is the leading cause of serious injuries amongst women and girls. This can be determined from the fact that one in three women die each year as they are killed by their spouse or their intimate partner. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC’s) National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), on an average 24 people per minute are survivors of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. Moreover, each year police responds to over 700 domestic violence incidents in the United States.
Domestic Violence Affects Women, Physically and Emotionally
The physical injuries include bruises, fractures, cuts, untreated wounds, complications with pregnancy. Illness including stress-related pain, anxiety attacks, depression, substance abuse, weight loss or gain and other related health issues. Behavior changes including unexplained absence or lateness, signs of fear, increased and unexplained isolation and changes in friendships and activities.
